ATHENS, Ga. – The top-ranked University of Georgia equestrian team took on No. 9 SMU and No. 10 TCU in a pair of meets on Friday. Georgia defeated SMU 7-3 in a hunt seat-only competition in the morning before edging TCU 9-8 in the final meet of the day. Georgia 9, TCU 8
Georgia used a strong showing by its Western team to edge the 10th-ranked TCU Horned Frogs 9-8 in Friday’s nightcap. The win moved Georgia to 11-1 on the year and improved its win streak to 11 meets.
The Bulldogs’ horsemanship team outscored TCU 4-1, with Katelyn Van Allen, Megan Hawkins, Paige Stawicki and Maria Salazar each earning points for Georgia. Van Allen started with a 68.5-67 win over Callie Rouse, followed by Hawkins’ 73.5-71 win over Courtney Chown. Stawicki picked up MVP honors with a 76-74 win over Taylor Prince. With the overall score tied 8-8, Salazar scored a 73-69.5 win over Alexie Estrada that sealed the meet for Georgia.
In reining, McKenzie Lantz scored the first point for Georgia with a 69.5-69 win over Alexi Child. Lauren Tieche followed with a 69.5-62.5 win over Samantha Bayer. TCU grabbed the next two points, before Sami Belcher rode to a 65.5-62.5 win over Carrie Schimpff that sealed the reiners' 3-2 win.
In equitation over fences, Michelle Morris and Carly Anthony came away with wins. Down 1-0, Morris picked up an 80-74 win over Kaitlin Perry that tied the event at 1-1. Anthony put Georgia ahead 2-1 with an 80-73 win over Alicia Turner. The lead did not stand, as the Horned Frogs earned the final two points of the event to edge Georgia 3-2.
The teams rode to three ties in equitation on the flat, as Olivia Dorey, Morris and Melanie Carraway each tied their opponents. TCU’s Haley Jacobi and Demi Stiegler each earned wins for the Horned Frogs that gave them a 2-0 victory on the flat.
Georgia 7, SMU 3
In a hunt seat only competition, Georgia rode to a 7-3 win over No. 9 SMU in the first of three meets this weekend.
“We had a very good, solid morning against SMU,” head coach Meghan Boenig said. “I am very proud of our riders for being very smart and getting the most out of mounts today. SMU was a wonderful host and we were excited to ride against them today.”
The Bulldogs out rode the Mustangs 3-2 in equitation on the flat, with Caitlyn Francis, Carly Anthony and Grace Rogers each earning a point. Francis got things started with a 70-62 win over Julianna Fischer. With the score tied at one following a SMU point, Anthony posted a 69-57 win over Courtney Line that allowed Georgia a 2-1 lead. Rogers followed with a 62-57 win over Renick Townsend that sealed the event for Georgia. SMU’s Rachel Reid scored the final point of the event.
With the overall score favoring the Bulldogs 3-2, the team headed into equitation over fences. Georgia strung together four victories in the event to take the meet. Anthony rode to a 74-72 win over Townsend, before Megan Southam outscored Fischer 74-65. Olivia Dorey followed with a 79-75 victory over Mallory Olson. Emily van der Walde secured the final point of the day with a 77-65 win over Jordyn Pettersen.
