Final Stats

MIAMI, Fla. --- Georgia (10-4) converted 7-of-8 free throws in the final 43 seconds to hold off FIU (5-9) en route to a 70-65 victory in the consolation game of the FIU Fun & Sun Classic here on Thursday.

"We were able to hit free throws when we needed them the most," Andy Landers said.

All-Tournament selection Jasmine James scored 18 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out five assists while playing all 40 minutes for the Lady Bulldogs. Khaalidah Miller added 14 points, while Porsha Phillips grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.

"'JJ' is developing into a really, really good -- if not sensational -- point guard," Landers said. "She's got a great sense, she's good when things get tight and she's good when she's under duress. She played back-to-back 40-minute games in less than 24 hours. I could tell in the second half that she was getting a little tired. I told her in a timeout that she needed to manage her mind down the stretch and she did just that."

Jerica Coley and Rakia Rodgers scored 28 and 21 points, respectively, for FIU, including all but two of the Panthers' 37 second-half points.

After leading by two at halftime, the Lady Bulldogs appeared to take control with an 18-3 run to open the second stanza. That put Georgia up 48-31 with 13:40 remaining. FIU answered with a 13-0 surge of its own to pull within 48-44 at the 10:10 mark.

James and Phillips scored the next four points as the Lady Bulldogs regained some breathing room.

FIU used a barrage of threes to pull within three points with eight seconds left before Miller canned two free throws to ice it.

The first half also featured a series of surges.

Consecutive threes from Anne Marie Armstrong within 23 seconds pushed Georgia to its largest lead of the first half at 20-8 at the 10:32 mark.

The Lady Bulldogs kept FIU at arms length for the next three minutes and led 24-14 before the Panthers began chipping away. FIU scored the final six points of the half to pull within 30-28 at the break.

Georgia shot 41.9 percent for the game, including 51.7 percent in the second half, and won the rebound battle, 40-32. The Lady Bulldogs were 6-of-14 from the line before hitting seven of their last eight at the stripe.

Georgia now opens Southeastern Conference play on Sunday when the Lady Bulldogs host South Carolina at 2 p.m. at Stegeman Coliseum. The first 1,000 kids (8th grade and below) in attendance will receive University of Georgia silly bands.
