Men's Tennis Celebrates 2011-12 Season At Banquet

ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia men’s tennis team celebrated the accomplishments of the 2011-12 season and looked forward to 2013 at its annual awards banquet Friday night, Nov. 2 at the Athens Country Cub. Head coach Manuel Diaz – in his 25th season – handed out awards, including the following: *Danny Birchmore Training Award: Sadio Doumbia Additionally, Diaz recognized the many accomplishments of the 2011-12 squad, highlighted by a 26-3 overall record for the spring, a trip to the NCAA quarterfinals for the eighth consecutive season, a 34th Southeastern Conference title, a semifinal run at the ITA National Team Indoor, and a final national ranking of No. 5. The program bid farewell to its four seniors – Sadio Doumbia, Will Reynolds, Wil Spencer, and Ignacio Taboada – and introduced newcomers Casey Kay, Marco Nunez, Austin Smith, and Ben Wagland. The Bulldogs will round out the 2012 fall campaign this weekend, hosting the annual Bulldog Scramble in Athens Nov. 9-11 while also sending three players to the prestigious USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships Nov. 8-11 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. Senior KU Singh will be compete in singles while junior Hernus Pieters and the freshman Wagland will play doubles. |
