ATHENS-----The Georgia men’s tennis team will travel to Tallahassee, Fla., for the ITA Southeast Regional Championships to be held Thursday through Monday at Florida State University.
Redshirt freshman Casey Kay and senior Will Oliver will open play Thursday in the singles qualifying draw as the No. 3 seed and No. 8 seed, respectively. Kay will face UCF’s Mario Samson at 9 a.m., while Oliver will square off against the winner of Stetson’s Egor Panyushkin and Michael Beiler at 12 p.m. Both will need two wins to advance to the main draw, which is slated to begin Friday.
“Our kids are really prepared and looking forward to strong competition this weekend,” said Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz. “We have a great opportunity to see someone from our region qualify for the National Indoors in singles and doubles. We want to add to the three guys who have already qualified and have good representation going to Flushing Meadows next month. As the site of the U.S. Open, that’s always exciting.”
Main draw action at the ITA Regional is slated to begin Friday at 9 a.m. Hernus Pieters is the No. 3 seed, Nathan Pasha is the No. 8 seed, and Austin Smith and Ben Wagland are seeded 9-16. Junior Garrett Brasseaux, sophomore Eric Diaz and freshman Marco Nunez will also compete in the 64-player singles draw.
Georgia’s doubles teams include second-seeded Pasha/Brasseaux, fifth-seeded Nunez/ Pieters, Diaz/Wagland and Smith/Oliver. Competition in the 44-team doubles field will also begin Friday.
The singles and doubles winners from all 12 regional sites will earn bids to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. KU Singh has already earned a singles berth with his performance at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, and Pieters and Wagland have secured a spot in the doubles draw.
