ATHENS-----The Georgia men’s tennis team will travel to Atlanta this weekend for the ITA Southeast Regional Championships held at Georgia Tech’s Ken Byers Tennis Complex.

The tournament will begin with a qualifying round on Friday. Six Georgia players will be in action Saturday in the 64-player singles main draw and a 32-team doubles draw.

The singles and doubles winners from all 12 regional sites will earn bids to the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in New York Nov. 7-10. Austin Smith has already earned a singles berth by reaching the quarterfinals of the All-American Championships last week in Tulsa, Okla., and will not compete in the ITA Regional.

The six Bulldogs in action include the No. 1 seed Ben Wagland, No. 2 seed Nathan Pasha, No. 5 seed Hernus Pieters, Garrett Brasseaux (9-16), Eric Diaz and Nick Wood

“We have a big challenge this weekend,” said Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz. “If we are playing our best, hopefully our guys play up to their capability and handle the challenges. We appreciate all the hard work from Austin these last three weeks, and hopefully we can add to our representation at the National Indoors.”

One round of singles play and two rounds of doubles are slated for Saturday. The tournament will conclude with the singles and doubles finals on Tuesday.

In Georgia history, 10 Bulldogs have won the ITA Regional singles title. Wil Spencer was the last to do so in 2010.
