Greetings from the Classic City. I hope you all had a great summer! We have begun another year, and our guys are off to a great start.
We had another tremendous year last season, claiming our 35th and 36th SEC championships by winning the regular season and the tournament crowns. We reached the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament and lost a close match to the eventual national champion Virginia.
The good news is that we return all of our guys who played in the NCAA Championships. This fall we have two seniors – Hernus Pieters and Garrett Brasseaux – two juniors in Nathan Pasha and Eric Diaz, in addition to three sophomores – Nick Wood, Ben Wagland and Austin Smith. We are excited about our team this year.
We began the fall season with the Southern Intercollegiates here in Athens. We wanted to start the fall with a good showing, but I never envisioned it being as good as it was. Four of our guys reached the semifinals, and our team combined to go 29-4 in singles, with the only four losses coming against teammates. Nathan went 6-0 to win the singles championship, and Ben and Hernus earned the doubles title.
The following week we traveled to Nashville for the SEC Fall Classic. The head coaches in our league decided to move the SEC Indoor Championships - which had been played in January - to the fall and play it as an outdoor tournament. We had another great showing in Nashville, and Austin reached the singles final.
We spent last week in Tulsa, Okla., at the All-American Championships. Austin continued his remarkable play by making his way through the qualifying rounds all the way to the quarterfinals of the main draw. In doing so, he earned a spot in the National Indoor Championships next month in New York. I can’t say how proud we are of Austin and all of our guys for the way they have competed this fall.
We have a few more tournaments this fall, starting with the ITA Regional Championships in Atlanta Oct. 11-14. Do not forget our lettermen’s weekend Oct. 11-12 and our annual awards banquet on Nov. 22. Call Lynn in our office for more information. Hope to see you there!
And as always, GO DAWGS!
