Smith Moves Closer To Main Draw At All-American Championships

TULSA, Okla.-----University of Georgia sophomore Austin Smith moved one win closer to the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Texas’ Adrien Berkowicz on Tuesday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

Smith will face Oklahoma’s Alexandru Ghilea Wednesday with a berth into the main draw on the line. Georgia junior Nathan Pasha and sophomore Ben Wagland have already received bids into the main draw. 

“Austin continues to take steps each match in the right direction,” said associate head coach Will Glenn. “He has improved as the fall has progressed, and he’ll look to keep it going tomorrow.” 

In the consolation draw, senior Hernus Pieters fell to Justin Carter of UMBC, 7-6, 6-1

A field of 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams will compete in the main draw Thursday through Sunday.

The All-American Championships is the first leg of the collegiate grand slam. Singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 7-10 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
