ATHENS-----Four members of the Georgia men's tennis team will open play in the inaugural SEC Fall Classic Thursday at Vanderbilt's Currey Tennis Center.
The SEC Fall Classic includes 81singles participants and 39 doubles teams from 13 league schools. The tournament replaces the SEC Coaches' Indoor Championship, which had been played each year prior to the start of the dual match season.
The Bulldogs are coming off a successful opening weekend at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships in Athens. Nathan Pasha won the singles flight, while Hernus Pieters and Ben Wagland claimed the doubles title. Georgia players went a combined 22-4 in singles, with all four losses coming against teammates.
"The hardest thing is getting everybody back to being physically 100 percent and ready to go after last weekend," head coach Manuel Diaz said. "Ben was a little banged up, so we are going to give him a chance this week to get back and train and get ready for the All-American Championships. The others guys are raring to go and healthy enough, so we are taking four of them. It will be a great field and we are hoping for a good showing this weekend."
Pasha is seeded fifth in singles and fourth in doubles with Pieters. Tom Jomby of Kentucky is the No. 1 seed.
Two rounds of singles and doubles will be played on Thursday. All four Georgia players will receive first round byes in the singles draw. In doubles, Smith and Wood will have a first round match, while Pasha and Pieters will have a bye.
The tournament will conclude with the singles and doubles finals on Sunday.
