ATHENS, Ga. --- Four members of the Georgia men’s tennis team have been chosen to compete in the prestigious Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships, the organization announced.
The tournament is the first leg of the collegiate grand slam and is slated for Sept. 29-Oct. 7 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. It features a 64-player main draw for singles as well as a 32-team doubles field.
Senior and 10th-ranked KU Singh and junior Hernus Pieters were selected to the singles main draw, while sophomore Nathan Pasha and freshman Ben Wagland will try to play their way in from the qualifying draw. In doubles, the teams of Pasha and Singh and Pieters and Wagland will start in qualifying.
The tournament starts with pre-qualifying rounds Sept. 29-30, followed by the qualifying Oct. 1-3. Main draw action is set for Oct. 4-7.
The last Bulldog to win the singles title in Tulsa was Travis Helgeson in 2007, which marked the third straight year a Georgia player reached the finals of All-Americans as John Isner won the title in 2005 and advanced to the final again in 2006. Also in 2006, Isner and Luis Flores won the doubles title. Last season, senior Wil Spencer reached the singles final, while seniors Ignacio Taboada and Sadio Doumbia reached the doubles semifinals.
Georgia will participate in one more tournament before the ITA All-American Championships, set to compete Sept. 21-23 at the Napa Valley Classic in Napa, Calif.
