ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia men’s tennis team held its first official practice Wednesday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, mixing in conditioning sessions with time on the courts.
“We started off today with a good meeting to mark the start of team practices,” said 25th-year head coach Manuel Diaz. “The guys have been excited to get going since they got to campus, but the first few weeks are always more limited. You’ve got voluntary hitting, individual workouts, and fitness and conditioning, but today was great just to be able to sit with the guys and then come out here and practice together as a team. It was an upbeat practice.”
The Bulldogs are already nearing their first competition of the season as Georgia will host the nation’s oldest collegiate fall tennis tournament – the Southern Intercollegiate Championships – next weekend, Sept. 7-10. Georgia will play eight fall tournaments before opening the spring at the SEC Coaches Indoor Tournament in Nashville, then starting off the dual match slate Jan. 25 vs. Vanderbilt as part of the ITA Kickoff.
The Bulldogs return seven players from last season’s squad that finished with a No. 5 national ranking, while welcoming in three freshmen.
“We’ve got great team chemistry,” Diaz said. “The freshmen are getting incorporated and they’re excited, and we’re seeing great leadership already from our upperclassmen. This is an exciting time. We’re already talking about our first tournament.”
