ATHENS-----The six-time national champion Georgia men's tennis team will face a minimum of 12 NCAA Tournament participants from last season including home matches against Georgia Tech, Florida and Ohio State as its 2011-12 schedule was announced Monday. The Bulldogs will also play host to the NCAA Championships for the 27th time May 17-28 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
"We are excited to get this year started and prepare for the great schedule we have this fall," said Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz. "We have traditional power Ohio State and ACC power Wake Forest coming in next March in addition to our regular conference schedule. It's again an honor to put on the NCAA Championships, and we have a lot to work for."
The Bulldogs play eight tournaments, including three in Athens, before the dual match season begins. The season begins with the Atlanta Athletic Club Collegiate Invitational between Georgia and Boise State Sept. 2-3, then America's oldest fall college tennis tournament, the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, will be played in Athens Sept. 23-26.
Following the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational Oct. 1-3, the Bulldogs will compete in three straight ITA events: the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., Oct. 3-10, the ITA Southeast Regional in Athens Oct. 21-24, and the ITA National Indoor Singles and Doubles Championships Nov. 3-6. Georgia returns home for the final competition of the fall with the Bulldog Scramble Nov. 4-6.
After a two-month break, Georgia returns to action at the annual SEC Coaches Indoor Tournament Jan. 13-16 in Lexington, Ky. The first dual match is slated for Jan. 21 against Clemson in Athens followed by the ITA Kickoff against TCU on Jan. 28. Nebraska and Virginia Tech will also play in the ITA Kickoff at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Facility. The winner advances to the National Indoor Tournament.
The Bulldogs play host to East Tennessee State on Feb. 4, William & Mary on Feb. 10 and Georgia Tech on Feb. 14 before traveling to Charlottesville, Va., for the ITA National Team Indoor Tournament Feb. 17-20.
Georgia returns home to face Furman on Feb. 27, then the Bulldogs open the SEC schedule at South Carolina on March 2 and at Florida on March 4. UGA then plays a five-match homestand against Mississippi State (March 9), Ole Miss (March 11), Wake Forest (March 14), 2011 NCAA semifinalist Ohio State (March 21) and Arkansas (March 23).
Following a road trip to LSU on March 25, Georgia plays its final two regular season home contests against Kentucky (March 30) and Vanderbilt (April 1). The Bulldogs finish the regular season on the road at Alabama (April 6), Auburn (April 8) and Tennessee (April 14).
The SEC Tournament will be held in Starkville, Miss., April 19-22, prior to NCAA Regionals May 11-13.
