ATLANTA-----Former Georgia star John Isner advanced to the quarterfinals of the BB&T Atlanta Open Thursday night with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Ruben Bemelmans of Belgium. It was the first match of the tournament for Isner, who received a bye in the first round.
Isner will face fellow American Jack Sock Friday night in a match that is scheduled to begin at Atlantic Station not before 9 p.m. Isner is seeking is second ATP Tour win in as many weeks following his victory at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships last week in Newport, R.I.
Isner is the top seed in the BB&T Atlanta Open, and the tournament's No. 2 seed Mardy Fish withdrew from competition due to an ankle injury. Isner has advanced to the final of the tournament in each of the last two seasons.
Another former Bulldog was also in action Thursday. Atlanta native Ignacio Taboada, who just wrapped up his UGA career in May, teamed up with Georgia Tech's Kevin King in the doubles draw. The pair lost to Colin Ebelthite and Marinko Matosevic, 7-5, 7-5.
