NEWPORT, R.I.-----Top-seeded and former Georgia standout John Isner claimed his fourth ATP Tour title by winning the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships on Sunday. Top-seeded Isner beat former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt, 7-6(1), 6-4, to become the first repeat champion at Newport since 2008. Last year, Isner was the first No. 1 seed to win the event in its 35-year history. Isner will be the No. 1 seed in the BB&T Atlanta Open this week at Atlantic Station. He received a bye in the first round, which begins Monday. Currently ranked No. 11 in the ATP World Rankings, Isner was a four-time All-American at UGA from 2004-07 and led the men's tennis team to the 2007 NCAA title. He holds the school record for wins in both singles and doubles, going 143-28 and 140-25, respectively while in Athens. |
