ATHENS, Ga. --- Former Georgia men’s tennis players Sadio Doumbia and Wil Spencer were named 2012 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athletes, the organization announced Tuesday.

Doumbia and Spencer – who served as team captains of the Bulldogs as seniors in 2012 – achieved Scholar-Athlete status by maintaining a GPA of at least 3.5 for the past academic year while earning a varsity letter in tennis.

Doumbia finished ranked No. 36 in the final ITA singles poll after posting a record of 33-16 in 2011-12, including a mark of 15-8 in dual matches playing a combination of Nos. 1, 2, and 3 singles for Georgia. He posted 10 ranked wins and clinched five matches on his way to the second straight second team All-SEC honors of his career. He was also a member of the 2012 SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll.

Spencer finished his senior season with a record of 32-13, including 11 wins at No. 1 singles and a team-high 21 wins over ranked opponents as he came in at No. 11 in the final poll. After helping Georgia to the NCAA quarterfinals in Athens, Spencer made a run in the individual portion of the tournament, reaching the round of 16 to capture the second All-America honors of his career. He was named to both the SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll and the UGA Athletic Director’s Honor Roll earlier this summer.

The senior duo helped the Bulldogs to the quarterfinals with NCAA wins over South Carolina State, Florida State, and North Carolina all in Athens. Georgia finished the season ranked No. 5 as a team.
