ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia men’s tennis rising junior Austin Smith was extended, and accepted, a wild card into the singles main draw of the upcoming BB&T Atlanta Open set for July 19-27 at Atlantic Station.
The BB&T Open is the first men’s event on the Emirates Airline US Open Series. Former Bulldog John Isner will also be playing after winning the tournament in 2013 and making two additional finals appearances there in his career. Smith’s teammate Nathan Pasha received a wild card into the qualifying draw last summer, while Ignacio Taboada and Pasha played in 2012 and Wil Spencer and Drake Bernstein in 2011.
Smith, a native of Cumming, Ga., led the Bulldogs to the 2014 Southeastern Conference regular season title with a singles record of 35-12, including a 9-1 mark in SEC play. He has four USTA Pro Circuit wins under his belt in his career. A tournament qualifier in 2011, Smith is playing his first ever ATP main draw match.
In other Georgia news at the BB&T Open, 1982 Heisman winner and Bulldog legend Herschel Walker will make an appearance and flip the coin for the Tues., July 22 College Night matches. Fans will get the opportunity to meet and greet Walker.
