ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia men’s tennis team will host one of 15 legs of the ITA Kickoff Weekend for the sixth straight season in 2014, and on Thursday the Bulldogs learned which teams will make the trip to Athens to compete in the annual event.
The third-ranked Bulldogs – who were selected to host by virtue of finishing in the top-15 of this season’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) team rankings – will welcome No. 36 Washington, No. 42 Stanford, and No. 44 Columbia to the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Facility Jan. 24-27, 2014.
Georgia is the No. 1 seed in Athens, followed by the Huskies, Cardinal, and Lions, respectively. The Nos. 1 and 4 seeds and the Nos. 2 and 3 seeds will meet one another in the first round with the two winners to play a deciding second round match the following day, with a bid to the prestigious ITA National Team Indoor Championships on the line. In all, 60 teams are competing for a place in the National Team Indoor in Houston Feb. 14-17, 2014. Host Texas A&M receives an automatic bid, leaving 15 spots available for each regional winner to complete the competitive 16-team field.
The Bulldogs have won the National Team Indoor twice (2006, ’07) and have reached the finals six times (1982, ’94, ’95, ’97, ’98, and 2009). The tournament began in 1973 and Georgia has played in it every year except 2003. Most recently the Bulldogs posted Kickoff Weekend victories over Vanderbilt and Virginia Commonwealth to reach the final site, where the squad advanced to the quarterfinals.
