ATHENS, Ga. --- For the fifth straight season the Georgia men’s tennis team will host one of the 15 legs of the ITA Kickoff Weekend, set for Jan. 25-28, 2013.
The Bulldogs were named a host by virtue of finishing in the top-15 of this season’s final ITA team ranking, and on Tuesday learned which three teams will make the trip to the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Facility as No. 31 Virginia Commonwealth, No. 36 Minnesota, and No. 40 Vanderbilt will join the fifth-ranked Bulldogs for the weekend.
Georgia is the No. 1 seed in the region followed by the Rams, Golden Gophers, and Commodores, respectively. The Nos. 1 and 4 seeds, and the Nos. 2 and 3 seeds, will meet in the first round with the winners to meet in the second round with a bid to the prestigious ITA National Team Indoor Championships on the line. In all, 60 teams are competing for a spot in the tournament, to be held Feb. 15-18 at the University of Washington in Seattle. Washington earns an automatic spot as the host.
Georgia has have won the National Indoors twice (2006, ’07) and has reached the finals six times (1982, ’94, ’95, ’97, ’98, and 2009). The National Indoors began in 1973, and Georgia has played in it every year except in 2003. Most recently the Bulldogs posted Kickoff Weekend victories over TCU and Virginia Tech to reach the 2012 indoor tournament, where the squad reached the semifinals.
