ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia men’s tennis team will host one of 15 legs of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kickoff Weekend, doing so for the seventh straight season in 2015, and on Wednesday the Bulldogs learned which three teams will make the trip to Athens to compete in the national event.
The Bulldogs – finishing the 2014 season ranked ninth nationally – were selected to host by virtue of finishing the year in the top-15 of the ITA team poll. Georgia will welcome No. 52 Elon, No. 57 Utah, and No. 62 Michigan State to the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Facility Jan. 23-25, 2015.
Georgia is the No. 1 seed in Athens, followed by the Phoenix, Utes, and Spartans, respectively. The Nos. 1 and 4 seeds and the Nos. 2 and 3 seeds will meet one another in the first round with the two winners to play a deciding second round match the following day, with a bid to the prestigious ITA National Team Indoor Championships on the line. In all, 60 teams are competing for a place in the National Team Indoor hosted by the University of Illinois in Chicago Feb. 13-16. The host Illini will receive an automatic bid, leaving 15 spots available for each regional winner to complete the 16-team field.
The Bulldogs have won the National Team Indoor twice (2006, ’07) and have reached the finals six additional times (1982, ’94, ’95, ’97, ’98, and 2009). The tournament began in 1973, with Georgia participating every year except 2003. Most recently, the Bulldogs posted Kickoff Weekend victories over Columbia and Stanford to reach the final site.
