Final Fours Set for Penultimate Day of NCAA Tennis Action
May 24, 2014
ATHENS, Ga.---For the second consecutive year, a top seed will not win a singles championship at the NCAA Tennis Championships after UNC’s Jaime Loeb was eliminated at the quarterfinal stage.
The top-seeded Loeb, who has played on every day of women’s action in Athens after her team advanced to the team championships, was beaten by Lynn Chi of California 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Chi, a freshman, moves into the semi-finals to face Georgia State’s Abigail Tere-Apisah.
The unseeded Panther has already made school history by reaching the quarterfinals and continues to rewrite the school record book as she advanced to the semi-final. She did this via a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory over No.5 Beatrice Capra of Duke.
The other half of the semi-finals were set as Ester Goldfield and Danielle Collins booked their places in the final four. Goldfield of Duke pushed passed Chanelle Van Nguyen of UCLA with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 score line and, in the process, booked a date against Virginia’s Collins. Collins defeated the seventh seeded Hayley Carter 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
The highest seed remaining in the men’s draw, UCLA’s Marcos Giron, moved past Cal’s Ben McLachlan 6-1, 6-3. Giron has been the only top eight seed in the draw since the first day of singles play and will face the only other seeded player in tomorrow’s semi-finals.
No.9-16 Søren Hess-Olesen of Texas booked a date with Giron with a strong victory over Mackenzie McDonald. Hess-Oleson, who would later withdraw from doubles play with his teammate Lloyd Glasspool, clinched his spot in the final four by a 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 score line.
On the other side of the draw two unseeded players advanced to the semifinals as Harvard’s Denis Nguyen and Alex Sarkissian of Pepperdine will face each other with a place in the championship match on the line.
Nguyen continued his run with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Florent Diep of Florid and Sarkissian topped Robert Cid, who earlier in the week defeated top seed Clay Johnson, 6-0, 6-3 in a dominant display on court six.
The doubles draws also cemented their final fours. No.2 Tennessee pairing of Mikelis Libietis and Hunter Reese moved into the semi-finals with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over the California duo of Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton. They will face Hunter Harrington and Dominique Maden of Clemson who knocked off the No.3 seed of Gonzales Austin and Ryan Lipman of Vanderbilt 6-4, 6-4.
On the other side of the draw Arjun Kadhe and Jakob Sude of Oklahoma State will battle Ohio State’s Peter Kobelt and Kevin Metka. Kadhe and Sude advanced with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Pepperdine’s Sarkissian and Francis Alcantara. The Buckeye duo advanced after Texas’ withdrawal.
The women’s draw saw two of the top four seeds advance to the final four. The highest remaining seed No.2 Georgia pair of Maho Kowase and Lauren Herring eased into the semi-finals at breakneck speed, topping Baylor’s Victoria Kisialeva and Blair Shankle 6-3, 6-1. They will face Pleun Burgmans and Emily Flickinger of Auburn. The Tigers duo downed UNC’s Jaime Loeb and Hayley Carter 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
In the other semi-final, Maya Jansen and Erin Routliffe of Alabama, the fourth seeded team, will battle Duke’s Beatrice Capra and Hanna Mar.
The Crimson Tide duo moved into the final four with a 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 victory over the Miami pair of Monique Albuquerque and Clementina Riobueno. Their opponents, Capra and Mar, advanced with a commanding 7-5, 6-2 victory over UNC’s Whitney Kay and Carolina Price.
The action moves towards its climax tomorrow as the semi-finals of singles and doubles will be played on the Henry Field courts beginning at noon ET.
