NCAA Championships Day One Recap
Wayne Montgomery clinched Georgia's come-from-behind win over USC.

ATHENS, Ga. — The first day of the NCAA Championships in Athens featured eight matches with three upsets, two sweeps and two 4-3 barnburners at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens.

Thursday’s action started with a 4-0 sweep by Virginia over SEC opponent Florida to kick off the NCAA Championships as well as a 4-1 upset from 10th-seeded Texas over in-state rival Baylor, seeded seventh.

The next wave of matches was high on drama as Ohio State earned a 4-3 victory over Oklahoma, sealed in a third-set tiebreak by freshman JJ Wolf to allow the Buckeyes to advance to Saturday’s action. Meanwhile, TCU took care of business with a 4-1 victory over the 25th-ranked Illinois Fighting Illini.

The home team took the court next, using a strong crowd of more than 1,400 to defeat Southern California 4-3, coming from behind to walk away with the win. Veteran Wayne Montgomery sealed the victory for the Georgia Bulldogs, a three-set thriller that finished 7-5, 6-7, 6-2.

Higher seeds held as fifth-ranked UCLA and top-ranked Wake Forest walked away with comfortable 4-1 and 4-0 wins, respectively, while ninth-seeded North Carolina pulled the final upset of the day with a 4-1 win over California. The win by the Demon Deacons sealed Wake Forest’s first-ever trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals.

The women’s bracket will begin play on Friday at 9 a.m. while the men’s competition returns on Saturday at 11 a.m. from the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
