OXFORD, Miss. --- Georgia men’s tennis players Ben Wagland and Nathan Pasha were each named to the 2013 Southeastern Conference Championships All-Tournament Team and Wagland was named the Most Valuable Player, the league office has announced.
The duo helped the top-seeded Bulldogs claim the tournament title Sunday with a 4-0 shutout win over No. 2 seed and seventh-ranked Tennessee at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center on the Ole Miss campus. Georgia also posted wins this weekend over Kentucky in the quarterfinals and Texas A&M in the semifinals.
The freshman Wagland went a combined 4-0 on the weekend including a pair of top-10 doubles victories with partner Hernus Pieters as well as a singles victory over 21st-ranked Tom Jomby of Ketucky – who had beaten Wagland twice already this season – and a third-set tiebreak victory over TAMU’s Junior Ore to clinch Georgia’s win over the Aggies and the place in the final. The rookie now stands at 23-7 on the year and 15-4 in dual matches with six ranked singles wins.
Pasha also posted four wins in the tournament, including the clinch vs. Kentucky on Friday in the quarterfinal. He collected ranked doubles wins over the No. 27 pair from Texas A&M and the No. 47 pair from Tennessee, as the sophomore improves to a team-best 29-13 in singles play.
The Bulldogs (22-4) now await their NCAA Tournament fate with the bracket set to be announced Mon., April 20.
