ATHENS, Ga. --- Going in search of its league-leading 34th Southeastern Conference title, the University of Georgia men’s tennis team will be the No. 2 seed for the 2011 SEC Championships next week and will receive a first-round bye before meeting the winner of the LSU (7) vs. Alabama (10) match in the quarterfinals.
The Crimson Tide and Tigers will meet Thursday before Georgia kicks off play Fri., April 22 at noon at the University of Florida’s Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville. Georgia defeated both teams 7-0 earlier this season.
The fifth-ranked Bulldogs (19-4, 10-1) shared the regular-season title with Tennessee, which enters the tournament as the top seed by way of the head-to-head tiebreaker. Behind the Vols and Bulldogs, Kentucky comes in as the No. 3 seed and Mississippi State No. 4, followed by Florida, Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Alabama, South Carolina, and Arkansas.
The Bulldogs will aim for their eighth SEC Tournament title and 34th overall. Georgia won the tournament in 1991, 1993, 1995, 2001, 2004, 2006, and 2007. The winner earns an automatic bid into the NCAA Championships.
