ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia men’s tennis signee Peter Bertran made a splash in his recent Davis Cup appearance on behalf of the Dominican Republic, posting a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over former University of Southern California standout and six-time All-American Robert Farah on Sun., April 6 at the Estadio de Tenis “Alvaro Carlos Jordan” in Cali, Colombia.
Farah won two NCAA team championships with the Trojans and was a 2008 NCAA doubles champion. He was both a singles and doubles All-American for three straight seasons. Bertran’s Dominican Republic squad ultimately fell 4-1 to Farah and Colombia in Group I action as Colombia advanced to the World Group Playoffs, but Bertran’s victory was a bright spot for the squad in his first Davis Cup appearance.
Bertran was born in Santiago De Los Caballeros, Dominican Republic, but now resides in Bogart, Ga., and is enrolled at Georgia Connections Academy. He is rated the No. 5 prospect in the state in the incoming class, and in 2013 he won ITF tournaments in the Dominican Republic, Aruba, and Barbados. He has a career-best ITF singles ranking of No. 112, and an overall record of 44-19 on the ITF circuit.
Bertran will join the Bulldogs for the 2014-15 season along with five-star recruit Andy Martinez.
