LOOKING AT WILLIAM & MARY: The Tribe will head to Athens after taking on Wake Forest on Sunday, and entered the weekend at 6-5 overall following a 4-3 win over Illinois State on Friday in Williamsburg, Va.
William & Mary does not currently have any players ranked in singles or doubles, but is led by John Banks’ 13 wins while Ben Hoogland has 11. In doubles, the team of Banks and Scott Huang have six wins to lead the squad.
Georgia owns a 17-0 record all-time vs. the Tribe, most recently collecting a 6-1 win last season in Athens.
LAST TIME OUT: The ninth-ranked Georgia men’s tennis team beat the eighth-ranked Tennessee Volunteers in their SEC opener 4-1 on a cold Friday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on March 1.
Georgia captured the doubles point for the ninth time in 11 attempts this season, and carried the momentum into singles by winning the first set in all six matches. Marco Nunez extended Georgia’s lead to 2-0 when he defeated the Volunteers’ Collins 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6. Garrett Brasseaux was next to strike when he defeated Ed Jones at No. 5 by a score of 7-6(7-3), 6-4 to make it 3-0. Tennessee continued to fight, and claimed its first point when 13th-ranked Libietis overcame 42nd-ranked Nathan Pasha 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1. With Georgia up 3-1, 95th-ranked Ben Wagland gutted out a 7-6(8), 6-4 win against 33rd-ranked Reese to seal it.
DIAZ’S RECORD WATCH: In his 25th season at the helm, Bulldog head coach Manuel Diaz is just two away from moving into sole possession of the second-most wins in Southeastern Conference history. Standing with 567 career wins as an SEC head coach, Diaz is one shy of former Kentucky coach Dennis Emery, who retired in 2012 after 30 seasons and 568 victories.
In first place all-time is Bulldog legend Dan Magill, who collected an SEC record 706 victories in his 33 seasons from 1955-88.
YOUNG PUPS: Georgia has gotten strong play at the outset of the season from the team’s freshmen. Rookie Ben Wagland has compiled a 15-5 mark overall and a 7-2 record in dual matches, including a clinch vs. VCU to send Georgia back to National Indoors. Austin Smith is 13-5 overall and also 6-2 in duals, while Nick Wood was out to a 4-1 start before suffering an ankle injury.
Marco Nunez won the first three dual matches he played in, snagging one victory each at No. 5 and No. 6 vs. ETSU and Furman, respectively, last week, and adding a quick straight-set win in the 4-1 SEC opening win vs. Tennessee.
IN THE RANKINGS: Georgia came in at No. 9 in the Feb. 26 edition of the ITA team ranking after being ranked No. 6 for each of the first four polls in 2013 and No. 8 on Feb. 19. With that, the Bulldogs have now been ranked in the top-10 every week since March 29, 2011.
In doubles, the team of Wagland and Pieters is No. 6 this week, followed by Pasha and Singh at No. 23 and Pasha and Brasseaux at No. 32. The latter duo is 9-1 on the season and 6-0 in dual matches, recently named to the All-Tournament Team of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships at No. 2 doubles.
ON DECK: The Bulldogs will return to SEC action when they hit the road to take on their Magnolia State rivals, heading to Oxford, Miss., to take on Ole Miss on Fri., March 8 at 3:00 p.m. ET before facing off against Mississippi State on Sun., March 10 at 2:00 p.m. ET in Starkville.
