ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia men’s tennis junior Wil Spencer snagged the first SEC Player of the Week honor of the 2011 season, according to a league announcement Wednesday morning.
The native of Ponce de Leon, Fla., is on a six-match winning streak following Monday’s 7-5, 7-5 win over Clemson’s Kevin Galloway in the dual match opener. Georgia swept the Tigers 7-0 at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Facility.
Spencer’s streak began as the junior won five matches on his way to claiming the SEC Coaches Indoor Championships singles title in Knoxville, Tenn., on Jan. 17. During that run, Spencer defeated each of the top three seeds in the tournament including the No. 2 ranked player in the country in Kentucky’s Eric Quigley in the finals.
The title was Spencer’s third since joining the Bulldogs this past summer, as he won the ITA Southeast Regional in October and an ITA Summer Circuit event back in July.
Spencer is 8-2 against ranked opponents and 18-4 overall at Georgia.
Spencer and his teammates have a big weekend ahead as they host one leg of the ITA Kickoff. The Bulldogs will take on Oklahoma State on Saturday at 2 p.m., and will meet either Georgia Tech or North Carolina on Sunday at the same time.
