We opened the spring season somewhat unofficially last weekend, playing in the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., and after some great performances from some of the guys there, we are now ready to start the dual match season!
This Friday and Saturday we will host a leg of the annual ITA Kickoff event here in Athens, and the winner of the weekend will earn one of the 15 spots in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships next month in Seattle, so there is a lot riding on our first two matches of the year! We’ll host Vanderbilt in the opener Friday and then play either VCU or Minnesota on Saturday. This is a huge weekend for our team. We don’t know much about any of these teams coming in, even Vanderbilt, who is in our conference. They’re like us – they’re young, and aside from a few players we don’t know much. And we hardly know anything about VCU or Minnesota. We’ve never faced VCU before, and we haven’t played Minnesota since 1987. We know tomorrow vs. Vanderbilt will be a tough, competitive match and we’ll just try to get the win and move forward.
I don’t think we’ve ever gone into this tournament without having played at least one tune-up dual match, so with a young team we certainly have our work cut out for us!
Hopefully you all will come out and support us at 2 p.m. each of the next two days at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Facility – it will be a chance to meet our young and talented group for the first time and watch us compete for a chance to make the field of 16 that will play for a national championship!
