ATHENS, Ga. --- The third-ranked Georgia men's tennis team will open the 2014 spring season when it travels to in-state rival Georgia Tech for the MLK Invitational Jan. 18-20 at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex in Atlanta.
The indoor event beginning Saturday will pit the Bulldogs against players from Tech, Ole Miss, and Memphis. No team scores will be recorded, but singles and doubles champions will be crowned based on the round robin results.
Georgia returns the top five singles players from last season's NCAA semifinalist squad and was tabbed No. 3 in the year's first team poll by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). In the singles rankings, UGA's Austin Smith leads the way at No. 12, followed by Nathan Pasha at No. 21, Garrett Brasseaux at No. 47, Ben Wagland at No. 48, and Nick Wood at No. 102. In doubles, the team of Wagland and Hernus Pieters came in at No. 12, while Pasha and Pieters are No. 59 together.
