ATHENS-----The fourth-ranked Georgia men's tennis team will open play in the SEC Coaches' Indoor Championships beginning Friday in Lexington, Ky. The tournament will be played at two different locations - the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex and the Lexington Tennis Club.
Georgia is one of eight SEC schools participating in the tournament along with Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. Now a singles and doubles championship, the event was a team tournament until 1988. The Bulldogs won the team title eight times, including six in a row from 1982-87.
Georgia won both the singles and doubles crowns of the SEC Indoor Championships last year in Knoxville, Tenn., as Wil Spencer claimed the singles title, and Hernus Pieters and Javier Garrapiz claimed the doubles crown.
In all, UGA has 50 SEC Indoors titles. Georgia players won either the singles or doubles every year from 2005-08 and have won both in the same year a total of four times since the SEC adopted the current individual format. Before 2011, the last time Georgia won both titles in the same year was 2001 - when Bo Hodge won singles and Matias Boeker and Travis Parrott took the doubles.
Georgia was led in the fall by Spencer, who won 12 matches against ranked opponents, reached the final of the ITA All-American Championships and won the consolation draw of the National Indoor Championships to finish the fall with a record of 17-2.
Pieters, winner of the Bulldog Scramble, and Sadio Doubia had 13 wins apiece, and Ignacio Taboada reached the singles final of the ITA Southeast Regional Championships. Eric Diaz and Campbell Johnson each won nine matches, while freshman Nathan Pasha won eight matches. Johnson won the singles title at the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational, while Diaz and Garrett Brasseaux reached the doubles final.
This weekend marks the debut of junior transfer KU Singh.
Action at the SEC Indoors kicks off this Friday and will run through Monday, Jan. 16 with both sets of finals. Updates throughout the tournament will be available at www.ukathletics.com.
