Hernus Pieters went undefeated at the Bulldog Scramble.

FLUSHING, N.Y. --- University of Georgia men’s tennis senior Wil Spencer capped off a successful fall season by defeating teammate Sadio Doumbia, 7-6(7), 6-3 in the finals of the consolation singles bracket at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships Sunday afternoon at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in New York City.
After entering the consolation draw, both Spencer and Doumbia ran the table to advance to face one another at the historic site of the US Open. Spencer captures the title after reaching the finals of the 2011 ITA All-American Championships and winning the Southern Intercollegiate Championships this fall. He also reached the doubles final of the ITA Southeast Regional in October.
“It’s always difficult when the guys have to face each other, but I’m really pleased with the quality of play,” said head coach Manuel Diaz. “I thought Sadio played exceptionally well and came back from being down a break twice in the first set to force the tiebreaker. Wil is a very tough opponent and he makes you hit that extra ball. He did a great job of sustaining Sadio’s attack, but I think Sadio is really making strides, playing more aggressively, and playing at a really high level right now. They were two warriors out there competing and playing well. In the end Wil earned the title, but I am really pleased with both of them.”
Meanwhile, on the final day of action at the Bulldog Scramble at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia got three singles and two doubles victories to conclude play in the round robin event on the home courts. Sophomore Hernus Pieters was named the tournament champion after going undefeated in singles and doubles on the weekend.
“We had an outstanding finish to the tournament today,” said associate head coach Will Glenn. “Hernus is the champion after going undefeated, and the match of the tournament was Will Oliver’s, with a 12-10 tiebreaker in the third set vs. Georgia State. We showed some great Bulldog fight out there and we look forward to continuing to train and getting ready for the spring.”
The day began with both Bulldog doubles teams collecting wins, as Nathan Pasha and Will Reynolds defeated the Vanderbilt pair of Michael Retta and Suresh Eswaran, 8-6, while Pieters and Eric Diaz beat the Commodores’ Alex DiValerio and Blake Bazarnik, 8-3.
In singles, Pieters took down Georgia Tech veteran Dusan Miljevic 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-2, Pasha beat DiValerio 4-6, 6-0, 7-6(1), and Oliver battled for the 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(10) win over GSU’s Ismael Lahlou in the final match of the day.
Georgia will now take a month-long break before resuming play at the SEC Coaches Indoor Tournament Jan. 13-16 in Lexington, Ky.
