Nov. 5, 2011

FLUSHING, N.Y.-----Georgia seniors Wil Spencer and Sadio Doumbia won two consolation matches each Saturday to advance to the final of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center.

Spencer first beat Duke’s Chris Mengel 6-2, 6-4, then downed Washington’s Kyle McMorrow 7-5, 6-0. Doumbia outlasted Southern Cal’s Daniel Nguyen 6-2, 0-6, 6-3 in his first match, then defeated Vasko Mladenov of St. John’s 7-6(6), 7-5.

Spencer and Doumbia will play for the title Sunday at 11:00 a.m.

“It was a great day for our guys,” said head coach Manuel Diaz. “Both Wil and Sadio earned two very good wins. They are probably playing their best tennis of the year right now, and they are reaching new heights. It’s great to see them playing so well at the end of the fall. Hopefully this will be a springboard for them in January and going into the SEC Indoors. I’m really happy with the progress they’ve made. It’s too bad they have to play each other tomorrow.”

Elsewhere at the Bulldog Scramble in Athens, Georgia players won four matches Saturday, including two by Hernus Pieters, one by Nathan Pasha, and one by Eric Diaz.

Pieters beat Victor Valente from Georgia State 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 and Clemson’s Yannick Maden, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, while Pasha topped Clemson’s Dominique Madden, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6, and Diaz downed the Tigers’ Zachary Rigsby 7-5, 6-2.

“We had a great finish to the day,” said associate head coach Will Glenn. “Hernus picked up one of the biggest wins of his career against a top player from Clemson. Nathan showed good composure to come back and win his match in the third set. Eric got back on the right track, and we’ll look to finish strong tomorrow.”

The final day of the Bulldog Scramble will get started Sunday at 9:30 a.m. with a round of doubles followed by a round of singles.
