ATHENS-----The Georgia men's tennis team won a total of eight matches on the first day of the Bulldog Scramble Friday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

Ignacio Taboada and Hernus Pieters both won their respective singles matches to go along with a pair of doubles wins. In singles, Toboada outlasted Vanderbilt's Alex DiValerio 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, while Pieters beat the Commodores' Blake Bazarnik 6-1, 7-6(4). In the first round of doubles matches, the Bulldog duo downed Bazarnik and Jeff Offerdahl 8-6.

In the afternoon wave, Taboada and Nathan Pasha beat Kentucky's Alejandro Gomez and Panav Jha 8-3, while Pieters teamed with Eric Diaz to beat the Wildcats' Ryuji Hirooka and Maks Gold 9-8(5).

Nathan Pasha and Will Reynolds also won matches against their Vanderbilt counterparts as Pasha defeated Offerdahl 6-1, 6-3, and Reynolds topped Suresh Eswaran 6-4, 6-4.

In other doubles action, Reynolds and Will Oliver edged Georgia State's Ismael Lahlou and Juan Pablo Gutierrez 9-8(8).

"We got off to a solid start today," said associate head coach Will Glenn. "We had some really good doubles play. All of our teams are starting to gel together, and we are starting to get some momentum in doubles for sure.

"In singles, we had a really good effort from Ignacio, being down a break in the third and showing good composure. Nathan Pasha, our freshman, is continuing to come along, as is Hernus. Will Reynolds got a big win today, and when things looked bleak he showed a lot of fight. He and Will Oliver also showed a lot of fight in doubles after being down and earned a big win against Georgia State. It was a great start and we will keep it going tomorrow."

Day two of the Bulldog Scramble features two rounds of singles - one round at 9:30 a.m. Saturday and another at 2:30 p.m.

Elsewhere, Bulldog seniors Wil Spencer and Sadio Doumbia claimed victories in the singles consolation draw of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in Flushing, N.Y. Spencer came back to beat William & Mary's Jamie Whiteford 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-4, while Doumbia beat Oklahoma's Tsvetan Mihov 6-1, 7-6(3).

"It was a productive day for us," said head coach Manuel Diaz. "It's good to be back in the winning end, and we are looking forward to some continued progress tomorrow."

Spencer and Doumbia will play in the quarterfinals of the consolation draw on Saturday.
