ATHENS-----Georgia Tech's Kevin King defeated Georgia senior Ignacio Taboada, 7-6(5), 6-4, to win the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships Monday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
In doubles, the Bulldog duo of Wil Spencer and Garrett Brasseaux fell to Florida's No. 1 seeded team of Billy Federhofer and Nassim Slilam, 8-4, in the title match.
Both the singles and doubles winners earn automatic bids to the National Indoor Championships in New York Nov. 3-6. Spencer had already earned a berth in the singles draw.
"It was an outstanding tournament for the entire team," said Georgia associate head coach Will Glenn. "We just came up a little short today against some top players from other schools. Ignacio Taboada really is starting to realize his full potential. This was one of the best tournaments he has had, and he'll look to build off this.
"It was a great, great run by Wil Spencer and Garrett Brasseaux to the finals. They upset some good teams. We're really starting to click, and all of the doubles teams are playing well. The future is bright."
Despite the loss, Taboada finished the tournament with three wins against ranked opponents and also reached the doubles semifinals. Spencer and Brasseaux took down three of the top-six seeded doubles teams on their run to the finals.
Georgia will play host to one more fall event with the Bulldog Scramble Nov. 4-6.
