TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-----University of Georgia redshirt freshman Casey Kay and senior Will Oliver earned spots in the singles main draw of the ITA Southeast Regional with two wins apiece in the qualifying rounds on Thursday.
Kay and Oliver will join seven other Bulldogs in main draw competition, which will begin on the Florida State campus Friday at 9 a.m.
Third-seeded Kay topped Central Florida's Mario Samson, 6-0, 2-6, 6-4, then rallied to beat Georgia Southern's Patrick Doherty, 6-7(2), 6-0, 6-3. Eighth-seeded Oliver also won a pair of three set matches, first defeating Stetson's Egor Panyushkin, 4-6, 7-5, 2-1, ret., then he secured a spot in the main draw with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 win over Florida Atlantic's Chris Janssen.
"Both guys played very well," said head coach Manuel Diaz. "I'm really proud of Will, coming back after losing the first sets in both matches. His opponents were cramping, so I'm happy to see our conditioning pay off. All of our guys are really excited to get started tomorrow."
A total of 64 singles participants and 44 doubles teams will battle for bids to the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in New York. Bulldog senior KU Singh (singles), junior Hernus Pieters (doubles) and Ben Wagland (doubles) have already secured spots for the National Indoors.
