KU Singh Reaches Quarterfinals Of All-American Championships
Oct. 5, 2012 TULSA, Okla.-----University of Georgia senior KU Singh defeated Clemson's No. 32 Yannick Maden, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships Friday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Tenth-ranked Singh will face Tulsa's Japie DeKlerk Saturday, and the winner will play later in the day for a chance to reach the final. With the win, Singh also secured a bid to the ITA National Indoor Tournament to be held in November. "KU played a great match," said Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz. "He did a great job under difficult conditions. It was cold and windy today, but he worked very hard. KU was very resilient and played a smart match. I'm proud of him." In the doubles consolation draw, the tandem of Hernus Pieters and Ben Wagland won a pair of matches to reach the semifinals. They first defeated Texas' Sudanwa Sitaram and Daniel Whitehead, 8-3, then topped Florida's duo of Billy Federhofer and Bob van Overbeek, 8-1. Meanwhile in Athens, six Bulldogs competed in the Bulldog Invitational. Eric Diaz, Will Oliver, Garrett Brasseaux and Austin Smith won singles matches. Diaz won in the first wave, defeating Furman's Tyler Droll, 6-1, 7-6(7). Will Oliver, Garrett Brasseaux and Austin Smith also recorded singles wins in the afternoon round. Oliver topped Furman's Ben Horst, 6-4, 7-5, while Brasseaux outlasted Armstrong Atlantic's Sven Lalic, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(3), and Smith downed Droll, 6-1, 6-4. All three Georgia players rebounded from losses earlier in the day. "It was a good finish to a lackluster day," said associate head coach Will Glenn. "We took some tough losses and we've got to come out tomorrow and compete better. I was proud of Garrett, who showed some leadership for the younger guys in coming back from a set down to win his match."
