TULSA, Okla.-----Georgia sophomore Austin Smith advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships with a 4-6, 7-6(7), 6-2 win over Texas A&M's 67th-ranked Harrison Adams on Friday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
With the win, Smith clinched a spot in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships as singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions receive automatic entry into the tournament Nov. 7-10 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
Smith, who fought off match points in the second set on Friday, will face Vanderbilt's Gonzales Austin in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
"Austin has had several matches this year where he lost the first set, but came back and won the match in the third set," said UGA head coach Manuel Diaz. "He has been able to maintain his level of play throughout the matches, and that's been the biggest difference for him. His endurance and stamina throughout his matches has been tremendous. His transition game and his ability to finish points has been remarkable."
It was the sixth win of the week for Smith, and his seventh this fall against a ranked foe. Saturday's match against Vanderbilt's Austin will be the third time the two have faced each other this fall. Smith won both times, including a three-set match in the quarterfinals of the Southern Intercollegiates and a 7-6, 7-6 decision in the quarterfinals of the SEC Fall Classic in Nashville.
Smith now has 15 wins this fall for the Bulldogs.
