Oct. 4, 2012
TULSA, Okla.-----Georgia senior KU Singh won a pair of main draw matches Thursday to advance to the round of 16 of the ITA All-American Championships held at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Singh, ranked 10th nationally, first defeated Santa Clara's 40th-ranked John Lamble, 6-2, 6-2, then rallied to beat Stanford's No. 112 John Morrissey, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. He will face Clemson's Yannick Maden in the round of 16 Friday.
"A lot of good things happened today," said Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz. "KU pulled out a really tough three-set victory to finish our day in singles. Hopefully he can have another good match tomorrow. It will be another good test for him."
Two other Bulldogs also won their opening round matches on Thursday. No. 36 Hernus Pieters defeated 16th seeded Olivier Borsos of LSU, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, then fell to Utah's No. 37 Slim Hamza, 6-4, 6-2 in the second round. Nathan Pasha, who won three straight qualifying matches to reach the main draw, topped Ole Miss' 21st-ranked Jonas Lutjen, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, before falling to Kentucky's Tom Jomby, 6-2, 7-6(3).
"All three of our guys in singles played very well," Diaz said. "The second round gets a lot tougher, but we competed well."
In doubles, the University of Virginia tandem of Jarmere Jenkins and Mac Styslinger held off Pieters and Ben Wagland, 8-6.
"I'm really encouraged by the play of Hernus and Ben today," Diaz said. "It was just a matter of a point here and a point there. They are playing well as a team and played high-quality tennis today. They'll have another chance in the consolation round."
Meanwhile in Athens, six Bulldogs will compete in the Bulldog Invitational beginning Friday morning. The three-day round robin event also includes players from Georgia Tech, Furman and Armstrong Atlantic.
