TULSA, Okla.-----University of Georgia sophomore Austin Smith defeated Oklahoma’s Alexandru Ghilea, 6-3, 7-6(4) on Wednesday to advance to the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships.
“Austin played well again today,” said associate head coach Will Glenn. “He is stepping up and coming forward on the big points. We’re really excited about the progress he has made, and he’ll be back at it tomorrow in the main draw.”
Main draw doubles action will also begin Thursday. Pieters and Wagland are seeded second and will take on Duke’s 25th-ranked Raphael Hemmeler and Bruno Semenzato.
The All-American Championships is the first leg of the collegiate grand slam. Singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 7-10 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
