Garrett Brasseaux

Oct. 2, 2011

ATLANTA-----Georgia sophomore Campbell Johnson won a pair of matches Sunday to advance to the finals of the Georgia Tech Fall Invitational at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.

Sixth-seeded Johnson will face the No. 7 seed Matus Mydla of Armstrong Atlantic Monday at 9:30 a.m. for the title. The Bulldogs will also be playing for the doubles crown as Eric Diaz and Garrett Brasseaux won two matches on Sunday.

“Overall it was a great day,” said Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz. “It’s great for Campbell to be playing for a championship tomorrow, and it was super showing by Eric. All of our guys have really benefited from these matches, and this is showing that the hard work they’ve put in is paying off. I’ve been really pleased with the way we’ve played and hopefully our guys will be ready to play some good tennis again tomorrow.”

Johnson upended the tournament’s No. 1 seed Daniil Prokskura of Alabama, 7-5, 7-5, in the quarterfinals before edging Georgia State’s third-seeded Victor Valente 6-2, 5-7, 7-6(3) in the semifinals. Diaz also reached the semifinals before he fell to Mydla 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles, Brasseaux and Diaz advanced to the semifinals with an 8-6 win over Clemson’s Gerardo Meza and Lipscomb’s Oliver Strecker, then cruised into the finals with an 8-1 win over Louisville’s Van Damrongsri and Albert Wagner.

Brasseaux also won a pair of consolation matches, beating Georgia Tech’s Eduard Segura and Louisville’s Damrongsri. Will Oliver added a win in the consolation draw for the Bulldogs, beating Georgia State’s Ismael Lahlou 7-6, 6-3.

Meanwhile, the qualifying draw for the ITA All-American Championships is set to get underway Monday in Tulsa, Okla. Ignacio Taboada, Hernus Pieters and Nathan Pasha will vie for spots in the main draw, which begins Thursday. Wil Spencer and Sadio Doumbia have already secured spots in the main draw.
