Seven Bulldogs Advance on Day One of the Southern Intercollegiates

 ATHENS, Ga. – The Georgia men’s tennis team saw seven players advance in singles play on day one of the 44th annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships Friday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

In Division I singles, all five Bulldogs won their opening round matches. Third-seeded and No. 24 Sadio Doumbia rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Alex Chen of Tennessee Tech and will play Nick Jones of South Carolina at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Later, No. 110 Ignacio Taboada captured a quick 6-1, 6-1 victory over Georgia Southern’s Alain Garrido. Taboada will face 15th-seeded and No. 97 Juan Melian of Georgia Tech Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Freshman Nathan Pasha beating Dillon Segur of Liberty, 6-3, 6-4 and advances to play Florida’s 9th-seeded Bob van Overbeek at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.

Sophomore No. 107 Hernus Pieters bested Georgia Southern’s Matthijs Verdarn 6-1, 6-3. He will square off with 16th-seeded and No. 105 Olivier Borsos of LSU at 12:00 p.m. Saturday.

Second-seeded and No. 6 Wil Spencer advanced to the second round with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Davidson’s Joe Schafer. The Georgia senior will play Nadav Ruppin of Winthrop at 2:00 p.m. Saturday.

In Division II singles, two Bulldogs advanced to the second round. Sophomore Campbell Johnson cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Vasily Eremeev of Tennessee Tech. Johnson will face Minnesota’s Brendan Ruddock at 10:15 a.m. Saturday. Fellow sophomore Garrett Brasseaux defeated Libery’s Tristan Stayt 6-2, 6-2 and will play at 10:15 a.m. Saturday.

Three Bulldogs fell in the first round, but will continue play in the consolation bracket.

Will Reynolds fell to Mercer’s Peter Tauchner 4-6, 7-6 (8), 6-3. He will face Trpimir Kujundzic of Virginia Tech at 9:00 a.m. Saturday. Will Oliver fell to Georgia State’s Lucas Santana 6-4, 6-3. He’ll play Samford’s Elliot Barnwell at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Later in the afternoon, Eric Diaz was outlasted by Minnesota’s Julian Dehn 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. He will play Jorge Varon of ETSU at 10:00 a.m. Saturday.

“I thought all of our guys played well. I think we came out and excelled in most of our matches,” said head coach Manny Diaz. “Even the guys who didn’t come away with a victory played extremely hard and showed tremendous progress.”

In Division I doubles, two Bulldog tandems won to advance to the round of 16 after having byes into the round of 32.

The duo of Brasseaux and Spencer beat Juan Ramirez and Jorge Varon of ETSU 8-5. They will play at 9:00 a.m. Saturday.

The 2nd-seeded No. 17 pair of Doumbia and Taboada knocked off N.C. State’s Matthew Thomson and Sean Weber, 8-2. They will play Davidson’s Calum Gee and Joe Schafer at 9:00 a.m. Saturday.

The 4th-seeded No. 24 pair of Pasha and Pieters will play their round of 32 match at 9:00 a.m. Saturday against Kyle Hoffman and Matthijs Verdam of Georgia Southern.

In Division II doubles, NC State’s Will Rollinson and Mauricio Antun held on to beat the Georgia tandem of Will Oliver and Will Reynolds, 9-7. The doubles pair of Diaz and Johnson had a bye into the second round and will play at 7:45 a.m. Saturday.

Play resumes Saturday at 7:45 a.m. The tournament continues through Monday with a champion to be named from each of the five divisions.

Originating in 1968, the Southern Intercollegiate Championships is the oldest fall tournament in the nation.
