ATHENS-----Georgia junior Nathan Pasha claimed the Southern Intercollegiate singles title and the Bulldog duo of Hernus Pieters and Ben Wagland claimed the doubles crown for Division I at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on Monday.
In singles, the No. 3-seed Pasha won the first set against teammate and No. 2 seed Wagland, 6-0, before Wagland retired. Pasha did not lose a set in his six matches during the tournament.
Wagland then teamed up with Pieters to win the doubles final with an 8-4 victory over Vanderbilt's Gonzales Austin and Ryan Lipman.
"Collectively it was a great weekend for the team," Pasha said. "It speaks to a good job that the coaches have done. Everyone on the team played great, and I'm just glad to be a part of it."
All five Georgia players in the tournament reached the quarterfinals, and four reached the semifinals. The Bulldogs were 22-4 in singles during the tournament with all four losses coming to Georgia players.
In doubles, the second-ranked team of Pieters and Wagland began the day with a win over East Tennessee State's David Biosca and Roger Ordeig, 8-7(5) before their win over Vanderbilt to end the tournament.
"It was a great weekend for the entire team," Pieters said. "It showed that all of our hard work is starting to pay off."
For Pieters, it was his second career Southern Intercollegiate doubles championship. He won the title with Javier Garrapiz as a freshman in 2010, the same year he won the Division II singles final.
"It was a great start to the year," said UGA head coach Manuel Diaz. "To have five guys in the quarters and four in the semis - I don't know that we have ever accomplished that. If we have it's been a long, long time. We wanted to have a good start to the year and we did that. There was a lot of growth by a lot of players. I was very impressed by all of them."
Georgia will be back in action Thursday through Sunday at the SEC Fall Classic in Nashville.
