JOHN'S CREEK, Ga.-----The Georgia men's tennis team opened the 2011-12 season by winning three matches on day one of the Georgia-Boise State Kickoff Classic here Friday.
The two teams will again play six matches Saturday at the Atlanta Athletic Club beginning at 10 a.m.
"We got a good start by a few of our guys today," said Georgia associate head coach Will Glenn. "Wil Spencer played well in singles and doubles. He and Sadio (Doumbia) showed some great energy. Nathan Pasha, in his first match at Georgia, did a great job. Eric Diaz played his first match and came up a little short against one of the better players from Boise State."
Friday marked the debut of Georgia redshirt freshman Eric Diaz and true freshman and Atlanta native Nathan Pasha. Pasha picked up his first career singles win with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Aidan Reid.
"I probably should have thought more about it being my first match at Georgia, but it was just another match," Pasha said. "The team support was great, and that gave me a lot of confidence."
Senior Wil Spencer also won his opening match of the season, beating Scott Sears, 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles, the Bulldog tandem of Spencer and Sadio Doumbia beat Aidan Reid and Nathan Sereke, 8-4. Pasha and Diaz were edged by Sears and Meredith, 8-6.
In other singles action, Doumbia dropped a 7-6(4), 6-3 decision to Meredith, Boise State's No. 1 player, and Diaz fell to Nathan Sereke, 2-6, 6-4, 3-6.
Following play on Saturday, the two teams will attend the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at the Georgia Dome at 8 p.m. ET.
