Bulldog Duo Advances In Doubles Tournament

URBANA, Ill. --- Georgia’s doubles team of Ben Wagland and Hernus Pieters posted a first round win in the NCAA Doubles Championships Thursday at the University of Illinois’ Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex to advance to tomorrow’s round of 16.

The fifth-ranked pair beat UNC Wilmington’s 30th-ranked Kosta Blank and Chris Cooprider by a score of 7-6(4), 6-3 and will face North Florida’s Moritz Buerchner and Norbert Nemcsek tomorrow. Times for the round of 16 matches have yet to be announced. With the win, Wagland and Pieters improve to 28-9 on the season and have won seven in a row. Entering the tournament as a No. 5-8 seed, they have already secured All-America honors – the first for the freshman Wagland and second for the junior Pieters. 

Also on Thursday, Georgia’s team of Garrett Brasseaux and Nathan Pasha suffered a first round loss to 14th-ranked Blake Davis and Dominic Cotrone of Florida State, ending their season at 19-9.

The Bulldogs have won three NCAA doubles titles all-time, including Ola Malmqvist and Allen Miller in 1983, Matias Boeker and Travis Parrott in 2001, and most recently John Isner and Antonio Ruiz in 2005.
