ATHENS-----The ninth-ranked Georgia men's tennis team won all three doubles matches and all six singles matches in straight sets en route to a 7-0 win over William & Mary Monday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Freshman Ben Wagland clinched the match at No. 1 with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Anton Andersson. It was the third straight match clincher for Wagland and the fourth overall, and it was also the first time Wagland has played No. 1 for the Bulldogs, who claimed their first 7-0 win of the season.
"It was great to play on a nice day after it was so cold Friday against Tennessee," said UGA coach Manuel Diaz. "Our guys were ready to play. William & Mary has had some bad luck with injuries, so it gave us an opportunity to play some different guys and address some areas. Overall it was a tremendous day for us."
With the win, Diaz tied former Kentucky coach Dennis Emery for second place on the all-time SEC wins list with 568. Bulldog legend Dan Magill holds the record with 706 wins in his 34 seasons from 1955-88.
"I'm just having a ball coaching these guys," Diaz said. "They're young and they want to get better each time out, and they've really come together as a team. This is what makes this so much fun."
Georgia (9-3) won the doubles point for the sixth straight match and the 10th time in 12 matches this season. Austin Smith and Marco Nunez topped Ben Guthrie and John Banks, 8-3, at No. 2, then Casey Kay and Will Oliver clinched the point at No. 3 with an 8-3 win over Been Hoogland and Adrian Vodislav. The sixth-ranked tandem of Hernus Pieters and Wagland completed the sweep at No. 1 with an 8-3 win over Andersson and Aaron Chaffee.
No. 72 Pieters claimed the Bulldogs' first singles point, winning 6-2, 6-0 over Aaron Chaffee at No. 2. Smith then made it 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Hoogland at No. 3 before Wagland furnished the clincher at No. 1.
"It was good to get our first 7-0 win of the season," Wagland said. "The conditions were much better than the last couple of matches, and we all got the job done today."
The Bulldogs will return to SEC play this weekend when they travel to Ole Miss on Friday and Mississippi State Sunday.
