ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia men's golf team will try to continue its recent hot streak when the Bulldogs tee it up in the Brickyard Collegiate Championship in Macon this weekend.
Georgia has ascended to the nation's No. 1 spot in the Golfstat rankings and the No. 3 position in the Golfweek/Sagarin poll after winning the Dick's Sporting Goods Collegiate Challenge Cup and placing second in the Carpet Capital Collegiate.
The Brickyard Collegiate Championship will be played Friday through Sunday at the Brickyard at Riverside. The Bulldogs have enjoyed success at the Brickyard, claiming team titles in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2012. Georgia also boasts medalists in Harris English (2007), Macon native Russell Henley (2009, 2010) and Sam Straka (2012).
"The Brickyard has been good to us in the past," Georgia coach Chris Haack said. "There is a level of confidence heading down there due to the previous success we've had. And I'm pleased with how well we've played thus far this year. We've won once and we were in the hunt in the other. I am anxious to see if we can keep it going, which I think we can."
The Bulldogs will be using a lineup of seniors Michael Cromie and Joey Garber, junior Nicholas Reach, sophomore Lee McCoy and freshman Greyson Sigg. Georgia also will have five individuals in the field: senior Keith Mitchell, juniors Mookie DeMoss and Straka, and freshmen Parker Derby and Jaime Lopez Rivarola.
"It will be good for us to have 10 players, including three of our freshmen, because we'll get to see how they react to competition," Haack said. "We've had pretty intense qualifying rounds, so they should respond favorably."
Joining the Bulldogs and co-host Mercer will be Georgia Tech, Florida State, Augusta State, Air Force, Boston College, Chattanooga, Furman, Georgia State, Gonzaga, Louisville, Princeton, South Florida and Virginia Tech.
