CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. --- The run of Georgia golfers Nicholas Reach and T.J. Mitchell at the 2012 United States Amateur came to an end Wednesday.
Playing at Cherry Hills Country Club, Patrick Duncan Jr. of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., eliminated Reach 1-up, while Talor Gooch of Midwest City, Okla., topped Mitchell 5&3 in the match play portion of the tournament.
Mitchell, a senior, had to survive a 17-man playoff Wednesday morning to gain one of the final 14 spots in the match play field and it didn’t take him long. Mitchell made birdie on his first hole, the 10th, as he was the only player to accomplish that feat.
During the stroke play portion of the tournament, Reach, a sophomore, had a 36-hole figure of 2-under and was seeded 13th. Mitchell was 2-over in regulation and wound up as the 51st seed.
Three current Bulldogs and one former Bulldog were unable to advance to match play. Junior Joey Garber placed 120th at 6-over, junior Keith Mitchell was 162nd at 8-over, ex-Bulldog Jack Larkin was 222nd at 8-over and sophomore Sepp Straka was 239th at 12-over.
The Bulldogs will open the 2012-13 schedule Sept. 7-9 in the Carpet Capital Collegiate.
