Sea Island, Ga. --- The No. 1-ranked Georgia men’s golf team struggled along with the rest of the field in the opening round of the SEC Championships at the Sea Island Golf Club. The Bulldogs carded a 28-over 308 on the par-70, 6,991-yard layout, leaving them in 10th place and 13 shots shy of the lead.

“I’m not overly disappointed,” head coach Chris Haack said. “We obviously didn’t play as well as we would’ve liked, but you have to remember it’s a three-day deal. We’re certainly not out of it. It’s a good thing it was day one so we have time to bounce back.”

Extremely windy conditions wreaked havoc, especially for teams teeing of later in day.

“It was very gusty, which made things hard, especially on the chipping and putting aspects of things,” Haack said. “We kind of had it the whole day. We got it from the get-go where teams that went off a little earlier got a little bit of a break with the wind.”

No. 41 Ole Miss posted a 295 to grab the first-round lead. The Rebels’ Will Roebuck is atop the individual leaderboard after carding a 69, the only under-par loop on the day.

Georgia’s counting tallies included a 74 from Brendon Todd, a pair of 77s from Brian Harman and Adam Mitchell and an 80 from Chris Kirk. Hudson Swafford shot 81.

Individually, Todd is tied for seventh, Harman and Mitchell are tied for 31st, Kirk is tied for 46th and Swafford is tied for 51st.

The Bulldogs are among 10 teams within a baker’s dozen of strokes from Ole Miss. Following the Rebels are No. 3 Alabama at 298, No. 16 Tennessee and LSU both at 301, Vanderbilt at 302, No. 9 Florida, Auburn, Mississippi State and South Carolina in a four-way tie at 304 and Georgia at 308.
