Georgia Golfers Seek Another Win In Linger Longer Invitational

ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia men’s golf team will return to action this weekend in the Linger Longer Invitational.

The tournament will be held Friday through Sunday at The Landing at Reynolds Plantation Golf Course in Greensboro. The teams will play 54 holes over the three days, with tee times starting each day at 8:30 a.m. off Nos. 1 and 10.

Georgia has dominated the tournament in its brief existence, winning the team titles in 2006, 2007 and 2009 and coming in second in 2008. Ex-Bulldog Chris Kirk claimed medalist honors in the 2007 event.

Joining Georgia and co-hosts Mercer and Kennesaw State will be Alabama, Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, Florida State, Furman, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, San Jose State, South Alabama, Texas A&M and USC-Aiken.

Georgia will use a lineup of seniors Harris English, Russell Henley and Wills Smith, junior Rob Bennett and redshirt freshman T.J. Mitchell. Henley leads the Bulldogs with a scoring average of 71.75, followed by English at 72.04.

In addition, the Bulldogs will have senior Patrick McShane and freshman Brian Carter playing as individuals, meaning their scores cannot count toward the team total even if their round is lower than another player’s. McShane joined the Bulldogs in the fall as a walk-on and will be making his Georgia debut.

“We’ve had some success at the Linger Longer, and that’s something our players are proud of,” Georgia coach Chris Haack said. “Even though only two of our guys (English and Henley) have played in this tournament, they all know our team has been able to win there, and that’s something they’d like to keep going. It’s great getting to play so close to home on a course that we know fairly well. I am also excited that so many of our guys will have the opportunity to play this weekend.”
