ATHENS, Ga. --- After dealing with cold and rainy conditions in recent days, the members of the Georgia men's golf team were naturally excited about the location for their first spring tournament.
The 11th-ranked Bulldogs will be teeing it up on the River Course at the Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande Sunday through Tuesday in Puerto Rico.
Coach Chris Haack will use a lineup of senior T.J. Mitchell, juniors Michael Cromie and Keith Mitchell, and sophomores Nicholas Reach and Sam Straka.
"It's going to be 85 every day. How can you argue with that?" T.J. Mitchell said. "We get to escape the cold for a few days and play in warm weather under sunny skies. It's a nice way to get the spring started."
Joining the Bulldogs and tournament host Purdue will be No. 5 Alabama, Augusta State, No. 19 Clemson, East Tennessee State, No. 10 Georgia Tech, Michigan, No. 30 North Carolina, North Carolina State, No. 31 Northwestern, Ohio State, No. 45 Oklahoma, No. 15 Oklahoma State, No. 17 SMU and Virginia Tech.
The Bulldogs had top-8 finishes in all four of their stroke-play fall tournaments, including a victory in the Brickyard Collegiate Championship and a runner-up effort in the Carpet Capital Collegiate Classic.
"This team has a lot of potential," Haack said. "We had a solid fall and all of the guys have played well in spots. In the fall, we realized that we have the game and the potential to play with anyone. I believe we can be in the mix when it's all said and done. So we'll knock the rust off in Puerto Rico and start the work toward the rest of the spring and the postseason."
