POWELLS POINT, N.C. --- Led by T.J. Mitchell and Keith Mitchell, the 16th-ranked Georgia men’s golf team posted one of the best rounds in school history on Sunday in the ODU/Outerbanks Collegiate Invitational.
Playing at Kilmarlic Golf Club, the Bulldogs recorded a team score of 17-under-par 271 -- the fifth-lowest round in school history. Georgia will enter Monday’s second round with a 10-shot lead over Liberty.
T.J. Mitchell signed for an 8-under 64, while Keith Mitchell (no relation) carded a 7-under 65 to hold down the top two individual spots. T.J. Mitchell became the fourth Georgia golfer to shoot an 8-under, which is tied for second place in school annals. Keith Mitchell’s 7-under is third-best in Bulldogs history and places him in a multi-player tie for sixth.
Georgia also got a 2-under 70 from Bryden Macpherson (who is eighth individually) and an even-par 72 from Michael Cromie (who is 15th). Brian Carter had the Bulldogs’ non-counting score of 2-over 74.
“These kinds of days are rare, but when you have one, they are so enjoyable,” Georgia coach Chris Haack said. “It’s great to see player after player striking the ball well and stringing together some good holes. It goes without saying that a start like this is great for our team’s confidence. We just need to keep it going two more days.”
T.J. Mitchell recorded two eagles, six birdies and two bogeys on his loop. Keith Mitchell bogeyed the second hole, then recorded eight birdies. As a team, the Bulldogs counted two eagles and 20 birdies along with seven bogeys.
The ODU/Outerbanks Collegiate Invitational will continue on Monday and will conclude on Tuesday. The Bulldogs will tee off Monday at 10 a.m., with live scoring available at golfstat.com.
