MACON, Ga. --- Keith Mitchell, a senior on the Georgia men's golf team, matched his career-best total on Friday to grab the first-round lead at the Brickyard Collegiate Championship.
Mitchell had seven birdies and no bogeys during his loop at the Brickyard at Riverside’s par-72, 7,175-yard layout. Mitchell’s 7-under total matched his career best established in the 2011 ODU Outerbanks Collegiate. The 7-under also ties the third-lowest figure in school history.
Mitchell is playing this weekend as an individual, meaning his figures do not count toward the team totals. Georgia has had two individuals claim medalist honors at the Brickyard – Harris English in 2007 and Sam Straka in 2012.
The top-ranked Bulldogs are sixth after the first round at 3-over 291. Georgia Tech snagged the first-round lead at 6-under 282. Junior Nicholas Reach and sophomore Lee McCoy paced the team lineup at even-par 72. Senior Michael Cromie added a 1-over 73 and senior Joey Garber signed for a 2-over 74. Freshman Greyson Sigg had the Bulldogs’ non-counting score of 4-over 76.
The Brickyard Collegiate Championship will continue on Saturday and will conclude on Sunday. Live results can be found at golfstat.com.
